Nvidia Had Problem With Laptop Chips

Nvidia discovered a problem with some graphics chips shipped in large quantities "of laptops, the company said Wednesday.

Nvidia has not determined the exact cause of the problem but said it relates to a packaging material used with some of its chips, and the thermal design of some laptops. The processors generate considerable quantities of heat.

To tackle the problem, the company publishes a software driver that causes fans of the operating system to start earlier and reduce the "heat stress" on the chips. The driver was provided to laptop makers directly, "said Derek Perez, a spokesman for Nvidia.

Nvidia will take a charge against the second quarter of U.S. $ 150 million to $ 200 million to cover the cost of repair and replacement products, which include graphics processing units and media and communications processors. He did not say specifically which of its products were affected.

The products were lacking on the ground to "higher than normal rates," said Nvidia. In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, she spoke to its supply chain to obtain reimbursement for a portion of the costs.

The company also had other bad news Wednesday. He said it was lowering its revenue forecast for the second quarter due to price pressure and delayed product ramps. The company now expects revenue to be between $ 875 million and 950 million dollars.
